Primus Information

Of the 20+ years that Primus has been together, the only permanent member has been Les Claypool, the band's front man on vocals and bass. In that time, the band has had two guitar players and many different drummers. Larry "Ler" LaLonde however, has held the role of guitarist for the last 16 years. Amongst the many different drummers they've had Tim Alexander and Bryan Mantia were the only members to record with the band on any of their albums. However the most creatively successful of their drummers was Jay Lane, a member that amongst the rumors of fans was their best drummer. The band claims that their music is heavily influenced by the band Rush.

Originally when the band was created, they would record their records under what was then Les Claypool's Prawn Song record label which was a parody of Led Zeppelin's Swan song. The band began as Primate in the mid-1980's with Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth. Primus started playing shows in the Bay Area Thrash scene, which is where the gained to beginnings of their fan base. To promote their first album, Frizzle Fry, they toured with another thrash scene native, Jane's Addiction. Their outstanding stage performance was a catalyst for their being noticed and soon signed by Interscope Records in 1990.

In 1993, Primus released Pork Soda that debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top Ten. This album was also the first album that was fully recorded in the home studio of Les Claypool. A year later Primus headlines the alternative rock festival Lollapalooza and also made an appearance a year later at Woodstock '94. In July 2005, Primus announced the release of a full length album from the band by spring 2006 with an international tour to follow. Primus has been ranked #97 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
