Brief History of the Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins are members of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The team is the league's oldest team in the United States having been in existence since 1924. The Bruins also join the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Montreal Canadiens as an Original Six franchise. The team has won twenty-four Division championships and three Conference championships. They have also won six Stanley Cup championships which is the fifth most of all-time and the second most of any American NHL team.

The Bruins were quite successful in the 20th century, obtaining a Division championship nineteen times, a Conference championship twice and a Stanley Cup five times. Famous players such as Tommy Williams, Bobby Orr, Terry O'Reilly, Ray Bourque and Cam Neely led the team to their successes and multiple championship wins. The team created bitter rivals with the Montreal Canadiens and the Philadelphia Flyers throughout the years that are still in existence today.

After the turn of the century, the Bruin's hadn't given anyone much to talk about until 2010. Up until then, the team didn't win any Stanley Cups or Conference championships. They only won three Division championships. Then, in 2010, things changed for the Bruins. They won the 2010 NHL Winter Classic over the Philadelphia Flyers. The team went on to place sixth in the NHL Eastern Conference and made a playoff opening round appearance against the Buffalo Sabres. They won this game 4-2 but ultimately were eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Then, in the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Bruins became the first team in NHL history to win a 7-game series without scoring a power-play goal when they eliminated the Montreal Canadiends in 7 games. They also won their first playoff series after trailing 2 games to none. The Bruins then advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1992 after beating the Philadelphia Flyers in four games. In seven games the team defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990. Here they faced the Vancouver Canucks and ultimately beat them, wining the sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history and breaking a 39-year Cup drought. This was the first team in NHL history to win a Game 7 three times in the same playoff run.
